Great Prodcut July 3, 2010 Barbie The shipping of this item was very fast from Amazon. This is a very good GPS. Sometimes the voice on the GPS seems to be a little confused about what to say next, and it begins a direction and abruptly changes or stops, but this has not happened much. The only complaint that I have with this product, is that when I ordered the updated "maps" for it from Magellan, I was told that I would be charged $10 and my account was charged $20. I called Magellan and spoke with reps that told me that my $10 would be refunded, but this has been over a year ago, and I still have not received my refund. I was a little disappointed about that. After speaking with them a couple of times, I didn't bother to call anymore. Overall, I would recommend this product.
Good, BUT... June 17, 2010 Robert J. Trosky (Pittsburgh) I like Magellan devices. I have a couple different models, and they balance good features with ease of use. They can be a little slow to acquire a signal initially, but that is typical of every brand I've used.
This particular item did arrive with a dead battery that will not hold a charge, so I had to rma it directly.
Also, when you go to get your "free" map update (since you will definitely get an old map) know the following:
a) it is not free. it cost $10 for S&H (you can not download it, they must ship on a SD card. This sucks for acquisition, but is good for portability to another device.)
b) you have to call their support within 30 days and email them a copy of your receipt.
c) It is a 2009 map update (it is 2010, right?)
Magellan going down hill June 17, 2010 Centennial 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Short version: Buy a Garmin.
Long version: I got a Magellan a few years ago as an unrequested gift. When I got it, I did not want it. Once I used it, I LOVED it. A year ago I even ordered a map upgrade. I think it is a 1210. My family is going on a vacation in Toronto, and the 1210 will not support North American maps. So I started shopping. Garmins do not take zip codes as an input and I loved my old Magellan, so I got another Magellan. I like the smaller size and only need the basics. So the 1212 for under $80 seemed PERFECT, despite online warnings about customer serivce.
Well, my 1212 will not run off battery power. So much for slipping the small model in my pocket for walking or biking. A few attempts to contact customer service online and by phone failed miserably. After considering all the time I spent researching and then the time I spent trying to get customer service, I said forget it and shipped it back to Amazon. I ordered similar / basic model Garmin (nuvi 1250). It has not arrived yet, but I already shipped the 1212 back.
You pay for what you get, crap! June 16, 2010 Real Deal (Mountain View, CA) My friend got it from costco as a gift for me and I was excited for my first gps. To my huge disappointment it was a piece of crap. It took a while to startup. Every other time I use it, it have problem picking up my new current location; by the time i'm lost and figure out how to get to my distination on my own, it finally pick up the saletile signal. Constantly have to reboot, slow to re-route, horrible point of interest (can't even route me to the state house in Boston), and slow touch sensor (each time i type in a letter i have to wait for it to pick up before entering the next and I'm a slow typer). Everything about it is just slow and extremely frustrating to use since you have to wait on it. It's embrassing to use when my friends are in the car, cus by the time it's rebooted and pick up the signal we are already at our distination with their print out direction. Most unreliable gps. Guess you get what you pay. Save the money and just use a print out map.
Well worth the money May 25, 2010 Robert Chemerynski (Gainesville, GA USA) This is my 3rd GPS unit after an ancient RoadMate300 and motorcycle specific Zumo450. At $85 delivered from Amazon.com for the latest features (speaking street names) it is well worth the money. Battery life was initially very short, but Li-Ion batteries need several full charge, full discharge cycles to obtain max life. After intentionally doing just that and with this test performed without any traveling/movement, today it went 3Hr 43Min by my watches timer. You'll really like the pleasantly soothing default female voice, fast intuitive menus and easy address entry with routing preferences (quickest/shortest/freeways/etc) for each address you select or enter. It is very compact, thin and lightweight enough to quickly tab release it from the cradle and put it in your shirt pocket as security for a quick store visit. Sized like a wide deck of cards. The minimalist design windshield mount is all industrial grade plastic that's very well made, 2 axis adjustable and it has the most powerful holding lever action suction cup I have ever seen! The screen resolution is a little coarser than my Garmin Zumo450 and unfortunately the rerouting is also much slower. Twice I had to stop to wait (10--15 seconds total) for the reroute calculation in a (open sky) town or I'd have missed the next turn.
If this will be your first GPS you'll be more than very impressed with how much user friendly capability you'll get. You may even become emotionally attached to it. It took me right to all of the 6 or 8 address destinations I entered. The trip planner and trip computer features are really useful if you take the time to use them. Overall, I am very pleased, knocking off 1 star for the coarse screen res and slow rerouting calculation time.
