Consumer Reports Recommended March 15, 2010 ohiogreg (Akron, OH) I love this little gadget! It has many great options. It helps you find locations that are of interest to you (i.e. banks, atms, post office, restaurants, gas stations, etc)
I like how it tells you which side of the street your destination is located on.
Ok, but could be better... March 14, 2010 Karen C. Fiedler (Minneapolis, Minnesota United States) I am someone that gets lost crossing the street and have wasted many hours and dollars on gas money trying to find my way, so when I bought a GPS I thought that it would solve these problems somewhat. This product, however, has the annoying ability to get me even further lost and, like others on here have said, gives me weird directions. If I try to take a highway instead of a back alley it gets confused. One time I was on the highway and it thought I was on a city road. Another time I was standing right outside of a house and I put the address in my gps. It told me I was a couple miles away yet.
It is a good device if you have a good idea of where you want to go, but don't rely on it too much. The points of interest are unbelievably out of date and there is no way to delete points of interest or roads that don't exist, which I realize is probably true of most GPS devices. I even e-mailed Garmin and told them about these issues, to which they offered almost no support and told me that I should e-mail THEM the errors so they can make the next version more accurate. Well what am I supposed to do with my one hundred some dollar piece of junk? I don't want to pay another hundred or so dollars for the next upgrade. The 255WT had the same problem, needless to say I am done with Garmin.
Well worth it March 14, 2010 probability It is accurate in giving directions most of the time. But I suspect that the maps will need to be updated in a year or two. There are some routes that I take going within New Jersey where it flakes out a little bit because the actual roads have changed and these changes are not reflected in the map. For instance, it would talk about streets that have been turned into a roundabout so the directions will no longer be accurate. I have experienced this a couple of times(in different locations in New York and New Jersey) since I bought it about a month ago. So I'm guessing that the maps are not newly updated as of Feb 2010.
For some odd reason, I notice that it works slower when I'm in New York city. When I make a wrong turn, it is suppose to detect that and recalculate the route to lead me to my destination. But it would take a while to recognize that I'm already off course (which is anywhere between 10-30 seconds) and then a little while longer for it to recalculate my new route. This doesn't happen all the time though. But it happens to me more often than not when I'm in the city.
Despite all these, I love this gadget. I never leave home without it. I always find what I'm looking for and the routes that it comes up with are pretty convenient and usually relatively light on traffic. It's small enough to fit in my pocket but the screen is big enough for me to see it clearly while driving. The time it takes for the map to load up is pretty decent (less than minute). It only takes maybe 10 seconds for the map to load up if it is opened in the location where it was last used.
Garmin GPS March 8, 2010 Anna Petra Perfect device to get where you need to go - safer than trying to use a cellphone GPS while you drive.
Disappointed March 4, 2010 Jade Queen1 (Medford, OR Usa) I bought this for my daughter. I have a Magellan and I found this GPS difficult to use. Worse is the fact that it lost satellite several times so I was stuck. I don't think it's user friendly. When I gave it to my daughter who is far more tech savvy, she said the same thing. Don't buy this model!
