How did I live without it! March 16, 2010 moveit I've never owned a GPS before this one and purchased this particular model after reading the reviews. I wanted one now since I am moving to Florida and find myself having to travel to both the East and Gulf coasts. The only thing I found quirky was that it thought I was still in FL when I got back to NY, but we got it straighten out. It also navigated me through some questionable neighborhoods in my area, but how is it to know? It recalculated quickly after I didn't go the way suggested. We also have been going to new restaurants during Restaurant Week and though I've lived here all my life I don't know my way around. All my driving has always included driving past a turn or the destination itself turning around and going back. No more. It hasn't steered me wrong yet.
I've used the bluetooth with my Samsung SH-A707 with success. I know its an older phone -- but if something works great for me I keep it. I'll be keeping this GPS for awhile too.
Good with a few glitches March 14, 2010 Brent V (San Francisco, CA United States) I bought this mostly for the free traffic service. I have my choice of two freeways on my commute to work so I need to know which one will be the fastest. While I check on my home computer before I leave for work, conditions can change rapidly. This device does an ok job of telling me if there will be traffic on my given route. However, it will not automatically reroute me unless traffic is really terrible. What happens is that the GPS tells me there will be a delay on my current route. I then have to manually respecify my destination and it will find the best route given the updated traffic data. And manual rerouting isn't a one-touch feature either. I wish it was smart enough to do the rerouting for me.
Since the traffic data comes in over the air waves over time it is best to not set your destination immediately after turning on the device. Keep it one for about five minutes before setting your route (if you are in a situation where you can travel for five minutes without guidance). Otherwise you might have to manually reroute as new traffic information comes in (see my note above).
The estimated arrival time and the traffic delays are very inaccurate. The arrival time assumes that you will be driving the speed limit with no delays. It doesn't even take into account that fact that you might be sitting at stop lights. I wish it would take into account whether you are on a highway or surface streets. And while it's good at indicating that there will be traffic, the real delay time isn't very good. I also noticed that the estimated arrival time does not change even as it finds new delays.
The good aspects of the device include -- usable bluetooth, wide screen, fast satallite aquisition, easy interface, good points of interest (with phone numbers you can call if you use the bluetooth). I actually end up using the points of interest more than I thought. I might be on the road coming home from work and I want a sandwich. I can easily look up the number and call ahead when I'm stopped at a light which is nice.
Best Product I have ever pruchased!!! March 10, 2010 D. M. Grimm (Marietta, GA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I absolutely love this machine. I purchased this for a trip with my dad going to places I had never been before and we easily found every hotel and/or place we wanted to see or go to. I have also used my nuvi around my town (Metro Atlanta) and have found new ways to get places that I didn't know about before. I have lived in this area for 18 years. We also used this last weekend to go to southeast Georgia and we were averted away from backed up traffic twice. The second time my husband wasn't going to listen to "Constance" (my nuvi) but received a reprieve when we ended up in the soup and were just able to get off and away from the trouble. My husband said he would never doubt Constance again. Plus I can easily answer my phone hands free without having to scramble and look for it while driving. "THIS IS GREAT!!!!!"
Questionable ethics on the part of Garmin March 10, 2010 J. M. Nelson (Minneapolis, MN United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Beware. When I purchased the 255WT, it did not come with a USB-to-USBmini cord, so I tried one that I got with a USB external disk drive. Neither my Mac nor my friend's PC would recognized the unit, so I couldn't register it. I sought assistance from the techs at a nearby Best Buy, and they discovered that it was the USB connection, whereupon they wanted to sell me a $20 USB cable; they also told me that most camera and disk drive USB cables would not work properly. If you buy one of these, be prepared to purchase a special cable with which to connect it, otherwise you might not be able to register it, which is required in order to get your firmware and maps updated. You won't get all you pay for unless you buy more stuff. That seems a bit unethical to me.
GREAT SYSTEM March 10, 2010 Sandy 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great unit. The only drawback to the whole experience is that it took about six hours to do the one free map download. Other than that it is wonderful. This is our first GPS and we will absolutely get a Garmin again. Everything is so user friendly. We love it !!!!
