A few bugs at first..... July 29, 2010 md My first time using the product I had a few problems. The unit was turning itself off every 20 min. during the trip. My wife called their customer service while we were still driving. They answered promptly and said that for some reason it was set that way at the factory. In 2min. they had us fixed up so that it wouldnt turn itself off in 20 min. intervals again. ( it was an easy fix in the "tools" section of the gps). On the way back from the trip it started to turn itself off again. This time, after talking to customer service, it was determined that the power cord was defective. They sent me a new one and the unit has worked great since then! It was frustrating at first but no problems since then. I guess it was just one of those things. I still would buy the same gps if I had to do it all over again. Its a great little unit, I'm very happy with it!
Magellan's poor performance July 16, 2010 D.ob (Bay Area) Picked it up mainly due to seeing the very clear and easy to read screen. I was a bit apprehensive with Magellan due to owning an older, poorly performing unit. The 1440 is easy to use, but suffered from several severe deficiencies.:
The internal batty doesn't hold a charge ( the same issue my old Magellan had). And there's no battery meter.
The Gps always seems to be late, and playing "Catch up."
The unit, when turned off, still gave directions. It finally stopped when the battery died.
I cannot recommend it.
Very good for the price July 15, 2010 Marty d'Fried (Leftcoast, USA) I bought two of these last month, one for myself, and one for my son. We both like it a lot. It was his first, and my third, counting one built in to one of my cars. I had a Garmin Nuvi 760 for quite a while, and got rid of it. The Garmin was OK, but not worth the high price. The other is in a 2005 Lexus, and basically sucks as far as usability goes.
This unit basically does everything I need, and does it easily. It is not really any better or worse than others I've used. I like the one-touch shortcuts, the ease of switching from 2D to 3D mode, and the ability to choose between ETA, Time Remaining, Miles Remaining, Time, etc. I mostly use the ETA, which seems pretty accurate so far.
I've noticed a couple of minor annoyances. When entering addresses, it will sometimes pronounce but not register an entry, so you have to pay attention to what is actually entered rather than what it says is entered. I think there is no excuse for this type of error, and it definitely should be fixed. It's simple programming, and whoever did it should be fired, at the very least. I mean, how hard is it to record the entry before pronouncing it?
Another problem is with the freeway assist. On my route home, there is a split in the freeway right before my exit; you must take the left fork, then the exit soon after, on the right. If I have the navigation on, it directs me to take the right fork instead of the left (very clearly). If the navigation is off, it shows the correct lanes for each. So, this makes me lose confidence in this feature, although it only seems to happen for this one instance. I guess it gets confused by the exit coming up, although the exit does not have its own lane.
The satellite reception is a little better than the Garmin, it seems. The Garmin will not work in my house, but this will, at least somewhat. I had them together for a while, so I could test them under the same conditions.
I like that it will operate and charge off my Motorola cell phone charger - I have several of these; it also works off the Garmin's charger, although the Garmin would not work on the Motorola charger (it went into USB mode).
I updated both the firmware and the map right after I got it; there seems to be a bug in their software if you try to do two updates together - it just sat there for hours on the 2nd one, saying not to disconnect it. I did, and reconnecting it did the update right away. This happened for both mine and my son's.
Next week, I'll be driving from SF to Seattle, so I'll see how it works for a long trip.
Great Gps Great Price July 11, 2010 Sharad Tiwari (long island city, NY USA) its a great product for the price and value. i have used it for few months now and do not have any technical problem with it yet. I thought Magellan use to make sub-par gps product, but after using this product i have come to know that it make a good gps instuments.
My second review for this product July 11, 2010 M. Thaler (Bkly., Ca) I thought I left a review a couple months ago for this - but must be somewhere else. We bought it refurbed at CompUSA for $79. I see by recent posts here that new units are on sale at Costco for the same price!
It is quick to set up, logs on to satellites quickly, and seems accurate. The main annoyance (probably very minor for many) is the fact the entry screen does not use the std. QWERTY layout of the keys. Since the screen is larger than my old 3.5 inch GPS,the finding of the keys to press in the non-std. layout "only" adds a few seconds evry time you need to enter an address. It would have been a simple matter to offer a setting option to align the keys in the std. format.
We liked this unit so well, we bought one for a friend and another to put in another o our vehicles. We don't make use of POIs on a GPS. The few times we need to do that we use our Blackberry phones to access Google Maps which are much more thorough and up to the minute than any stand alone GPS
