Very handy and accurate June 26, 2010 Marine1 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
just bought this because I am heading back to Afghanistan. it works great has the fields you need and not a lot of clutter. picks up A signal in seconds even indoors and stays inplace when you strap it on. it will surely be a life saver for me on the ground when I need a quick reliable reference. just wish you could load maps to it. it works on 2 AA batt so you don't have to worry about running out of a charge. I recommend this product!
Unit has a bug in user grid / datum June 21, 2010 A. Gil 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great unit, if you don't need user grid. If you do, there is a bug in the algorithm that can results in displaying wrong coordinates. I measured an error of more than 240ft (around 70m). Note that this happens with SW version 2.30 released around May, 2010. Earlier SW versions, didn't even support user grid. There is a clip on YouTube showing the bug.

Garmin response is that there is nothing wrong with the SW. Though it should be mentioned that this was their response also when the feature was not working at all. Later on Garmin released SW version 2.30, advertising a fix for user grid.
If you need user grid, don't buy this device. About the device in general, the bad part is that the HW is really nice, but I have concerns about the SW. I would be a bit worried when such a basic feature is not working, that there are other problems with the device.
Handy for Competitive Trail Riders June 13, 2010 Beverly A. Roberts (Compton, AR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This GPS is handy for equestrians for trail riding and competitive trail riding. Big, simple screen, yet GPS is small enough that it is worn on the wrist for easy viewing. Batteries last long enough for a weekend of riding.
Going to Afghanistan, want to get back June 10, 2010 John Wright (Austin, TX) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this for my son, going to Afghanistan to find his way home. This is recommended by the soldiers.
Good compact basic GPS June 1, 2010 NoelArmourson (Denver CO) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Garmin Foretrex 401 was purchased when my ageing Magellan Explorist finally failed to boot.
The Garmin was quicker out of the box in acquiring satellites and position fix, and accuracy apears to be better.
The compass function is, of course, imperfect but still perfectly usable for my primary purpose (geotagging of photos). The compass may require occasional calibration.
Battery life with two brand-new freshly charged Maha Powerex 1000s is about 16 hours, with the light on for over 6 of those hours. Older, nearly failing batteries with several hundred uses on them gave me about 3 hours.
The lack of mapping capability isn't an issue with my current use, and seems a reasonable compromise with the compact size.
Storage capacity is limited, I ran out of space for tracklog storage with 9 tracklogs of about 20 miles (<2 hours travel) each.
The .gpx file opens easily in GeoSetter.
As others have noted, documentation isn't the greatest, but I have found it easy to use.
