Not impressed July 27, 2010 Richard J. Windisch (USA) We bought this GPS because my wife didn't like using a laptop with Streets and Trips. As usual, Amazon shipped it right away, but it languished at the shipper's terminal. It was a nice looking unit with a large screen and clear audio. Initial loading of the software took 45 minutes. Loading points of interest from Tom Tom's website was very frustrating. Their site said it was a beta. You'd think by now they'd have established a well laid out site and worked most of the bugs out. When you select the icon for points of interest, it takes you to a list. By choosing the U.S. only, the list reduces to 79 pages. Pick a point of interest and it quickly loads. Then the site takes you back to the icon. This isn't too bad when you're on page 4, but at page 55, it's a pain because you have to click on the icon again, choose U.S. again, and thumb through all the pages again to reach page 56. After spending a long time entering points of interest, we took it for a short trip to learn how to use it. Even though we did not opt to avoid interstates and tried both the shortest and fastest route, it insisted on a route that took us 5 miles out of our way on a 17 mile trip. We then took it to South Dakota, an 1100 mile trip. The suction mount quit half way there. We couldn't see too many flaws with the route, as there are only so many ways from Indiana to South Dakota. We couldn't alter a route or enter our own route. We returned it. Streets and Trips works a lot better
Great First GPS Unit July 15, 2010 M. Connelly (Ohio) July 15, 2010: I just ordered and received in two days the TomTom XXL 530S GPS. I don't have experience with other GPS but this one sure has made a positive impression on me. I really like it. When I took it out of the box the first thing I did was connect to my computer for an update, and there were several.
It synched very quickly with the satellites, (I live in the boonies) with excellent strength and this, inside my house! I took it for a test spin after playing with it and adjusting some settings, and I am amazed at the accuracy of this thing. The speed is dead on, the location on the road is dead on. I intentionally went a different route that what was suggested and it instantly corrected itself and lead me the way I was going anyway. Amazing.
The only issue I have had, is I haven't been able to change the arrow 'cursor' to a car 'cursor', and I haven't been able to get the traffic light camera update to download. Time will tell but as of right now I am very pleased. I will update this in a couple of weeks and report my progress.
Not a Garmin June 30, 2010 D. Pierpont 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had an old Garmin that needed a map update. So, this looked like a good deal. The latest features. Big screen. What could go wrong.
No mater how I adjusted it led me down back roads and into neighborhoods I didn't belong in. Routing was disjointed and didn't follow any patern.
POI's are limited and old. Many are now closed or were never where they were supposed to be.
I gave it to my son to play with. and then bought a Garmin 1490T.
You get what you pay for.
Great GPS June 23, 2010 Smitty (Alexandria, VA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a great GPS device. Actually it was fairly highly rated by Consumer Reports so I am not sure where the 1 and 2 Star reviewers are finding issue with this product. The screen is larger than most TomToms which makes it easier for people of all ages to see. As a result of a larger screen typing on the touch screen keyboard is easier for those with ....shall we say... fatter fingers. As with this or any other Tomtom product please be sure to plug it in to and update frequently with your computer.
The only logic I can see for some of the bad reviews that I read is that maybe those buyers did not do this with any degree of frequency. Maps are updated ALL THE TIME. When I first opened the box and tried entering my address, it was not in the system. So I plugged my TomTom into my PC and went on-line. There were several megabytes of free updates and downloads available. Once I let my system get through that, my location was correctly added. In addition, I have a couple of friends that live in remote parts of other states and their addresses were also found using the TomTom - something which one friend said a Garmin could not provide.
And finally one of the great things about this and other TomToms is you can download (for a fee) other voices for your GPS device. I typically use the voice of Homer Simpson to get me somewhere and Darth Vader to bring me home. But there are others, to include famous comedians, Yoda is coming out soon, there is Kitt from Nightrider and for those that have children and can bear it, Sponge Bob and Dora are to be released too. Now these voices cost about $12.95 a pop, but in many cases they do add entertainment value to what would be just another GPS device.
Big screen at a low price June 20, 2010 XXL (Fremont, CA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The biggest selling point of this product is its 5" screen and the low price. After owning more than 6 GPSs including 3 tomtoms and 1 garmin, the garmin is the best and tomtoms have better hardware and price. I felt this XXL530S is an average one among my GPSs.
