So far so good July 31, 2010 Heros v. Borcke This is my third TomTom, which I bought with extreme reluctance, following a desasterous and very costly experience with TomTom's GO 920 model. Was familiar with TomTom's basic line of thinking, which made the set-up (feature selection) process easy. Price value relation for this model appears to be very good. Used the device both in the US and Canada with very good results. Traffic info and suggested re-routing in Canada (Ontario) worked exactly as stated and was most helpful. Unit is now one (1) month in my use, which does not allow for a competent comment on reliability or it's long term quality.
Like it very much, but... July 31, 2010 N. DeFelice (Larose, LA) This unit was an upgrade to the TomTom GO 730. I really like this new TomTom XXL 540TM very much. I like the 5" wide screen, the lane assist screen and the free traffic signal updates each time you connect your unit to TomTom Home. The one thing I do NOT like about this unit is that it fades nearly to black in sunlight. :( Other than that, I am pleased with this product and would recommend it.
great gps July 31, 2010 Teacher from San Jose (San Jose, Ca. USA) This is a great product. The price was very fair and it came very quickly. We are very happy and would recommend this product to others.
Love the maps, hate the unit. July 30, 2010 janus657 (Cincinnati, OH USA) I am a huge fan of TomTom's mapping software. I first saw their software on my brother's Palm Treo. It was the first GPS system program that actually impressed me with its clear map labels and easy to use interface. TomTom's stand-alone unit gives you the ability to mark maps for editing later, in case you find a flaw in the map en-route. This model has the advantage of a huge 5 inch screen making it easy to read and operate. And the voice is pretty good at prompting directions and pronouncing street names.
The software is great, but the unit itself drives me crazy. It CANNOT hold a charge at all. Even when its turned off, it still looses battery charge. It takes it a long time to find the GPS satellite after starting up. And its difficult to mount without using all three hands.
Overall find the TomTom XXL 540 extremely useful. I would be lost without it. But if I had to do it over again, I would not buy this model. If I'd probably go for the smaller 4.5 inch screens. Maybe they would have better battery life. Otherwise I'd check out GPS map systems from Garmin.
GPS July 30, 2010 B. Vagell (S.Windsor,Ct.) The Tom Tom I purchased is nice ,but is still plagued with the inability to CORRECTLY get me where I need to go with some level of efficiency. Also there is no way to transfer Favorite addresses to it from my older one.
