2 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Time   August 26, 2010

I had never owned a GPS before. So I figured that any ol' portable navigation device would be sufficient for my basic needs. Truth be told, this unit DOES satisfy the most basic needs of a 1st time GPS owner. But there are more than enough shortcomings to frustrate veteran owners as well as newbies.

First, let's look at the positives. The large screen is a huge plus. It's rare that you have to do a frustrating double-tap to make the screen register your selection. Colors are vivid and you have quite a few color schemes to choose from. Sound is also great on this unit. At max volume, I can have music playing and still hear what directions the unit is giving me. There is no bluetooth capability though.

I absolutely love the idea of the suction mount. The execution may not be perfect. But overall, I appreciate the vision they had when designing it. It clicks on to the back of the TomTom and folds in towards the unit or out away from the unit to provide adjustable viewing capability once attached to the windshield. Attaching the unit to your windshield or to the supplied suction disc (which you can apply to your dashboard area) is quite easy. With a simple turn and click, your TomTom will be stuck to the glass with no worries about it falling. Removing it definitely isn't as easy as attaching it though. As a matter of fact, I've simply come to removing the unit itself and just leaving the mount attached to the glass. Again, the mount/suction cup is NOT part of the actual GPS unit. This could be a good or bad thing depending on personal taste. For me, I would have preferred that the mount be a part of the entire unit since removal can be a bit tedious. The mount is certainly not bulky and I'm sure they could have figured out a way to have it permanently attached to the unit.

Another good thing about this unit is that it was easy to use directly out of the box. That's a good thing because the instruction manual that is included doesn't really give you much other than the basics. You have to go to the TomTom website to get details as well as to unlock the full capabilities of your GPS. And yes, you have to register your email address to use the supplied voucher code which entitles you to free lifetime maps (you are limited to 4 free updates per year). (As a side note, the 'm' designation after the 550M stands for maps. The 't' in 540T stands for traffic. 550TM stands for traffic and maps. And so forth.). Other free things you can get on the site are different voices, new start-up/shut-down images, different car icons... (a lot of these things are user/community created), updated POI's (points of interest), etc. The unit has a set amount of storage capacity though. So you'll eventually get to a point where you will have to delete something if you want to add something. The unit does NOT have expandable memory. I would recommend updating your TomTom as soon as you get it b/c it will most likely be out of date on first use.

Battery life isn't the greatest with this unit. I'll charge it in my house (with the supplied USB cord and my own personal wall adapter) to max battery. But by the time I drive around for a little bit (20-30 mins), the battery seems to be already down to a little over half-life. In other words, always make sure you have that car charger with you before embarking on a long trip. Thankfully, if you physically turn the unit off as you're driving (for instance, to conserve battery life), the unit remembers the most recent destination and prompts you when you turn it back on.

Now the negatives. As previously stated, you can NOT upgrade the memory. The mount can be fussy. The instruction manual included is sparse. And the battery life isn't the greatest. To add to those things, there are several voice selections to choose from. But only ONE (in English) will actually speak the street names. Which pretty much makes it pointless to select any other voice except the ONE (two if you count the chap with the British accent) that will speak street names. If you're familiar w/the city/town you're traveling in, spoken street names may not be such a big deal. But most people don't use a GPS in small towns they are familiar with. So having the unit speak the street names would be important for those who are going to places they don't know. Unfortunately, you only get 2 choices of voices that are capable of speaking street names. Another HUGE con for me is the fact that you can NOT select an option to view your trip turn-by-turn. What this means is that you can NOT "look" ahead to view what directions the unit has in store for you. So for instance, you can't click an option that will show you your planned route in detail. For instance,

1 - take exit 19, smith st
2 - turn left on to smith st
3 - travel 5 miles to henry pl
4 - turn right on henry pl

This is a huge con for me b/c say for instance you want to write down the directions and give it to a fellow driver, you can't do that w/this unit. Or for example, if you wanted to write down the directions b/c your unit was low on power and your car adapter or cigarette lighter weren't working. Or even for instance, if you just wanted to see which way the unit was sending you b/c you heard there was an accident, you simply can't look at a detailed summary of a planned trip. Sure, you can click "alternate route". But it still doesn't display turn-by-turn directions for you. Disappointing to me since I have seen other units with this feature.

Also annoying is the fact that you can't delete individual recent destinations. So if you wanted to surprise the wife or hubby with a gift from some place they mentioned, I'd suggest NOT typing that place into the GPS since you won't be able to delete that specific destination. You'll have to delete ALL of your recent destinations. Important to know if you plan to loan your unit to a friend who you don't want knowing every single place you've been to or if it will be a unit that has multiple users.

The negatives may not seem like a big deal. But after a bit of use, trust me, they start to stand out.

In closing, I'd just like to share with fellow GPS owners that if you plan to store family and friends' addresses under "favorites", try to store a house number that is a few blocks off or a few houses down. Or try not to use that family or friend's real name. If your GPS is ever stolen or lost, you would be giving way too much information to whoever found it.

Have a great one. And good luck on finding the right unit.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter GPS - large screen, easy to use   August 23, 2010

I bought this for my wife as she has no Navigation in her car. I did some research and liked the description and most reviews for the XXL prior models and took a chance with the newest model. We've used it for about 2 weeks. Works great so far. Purchased the lifetime maps option and updated the maps first thing. Note: It does take a while to refresh the maps - consider connecting to a PC with a wired Ethernet connection rather than wireless. For Eastern PA and NJ, the maps are spot on. Unlike another review I saw here, the road names and house numbers have been 100% accurate and up-to-date. Speed limits were spot-on even on back roads. We found the user interface very easy and intuitive. Some here have harshly criticized the UI. This our first portable GPS so perhaps ignorance is bliss, but I cannot complain. I found the UI more user-friendly than my Caddy factory Nav. NOTE: We are both casual travelers, and perhaps with further use we will want to access the advanced menu options. One poster here mentioned that you can easily enable the older UI's advanced menu options, and I'm planning on giving that a try. The large screen is easy to see, and you can change the colors if you desire, but we both like the out-of-the-box high-contrast colors for easy viewing. My wife loves the download-able turn-by-turn voices and loaded 3-4 free ones and 1 that she paid for. Unlike our friends' GPS you can easily switch voices during the ride (Our friend has to connect her's to a PC to change the current voice.) The unit stays firmly connected to the window mount. It does take two hands to click it in properly, but it's not very hard to do. Overall we are very pleased with the purchase. Going to take it on longer trip soon, any issues with that, or with installing the menu update and I'll post an updated review. I'm hesitant to give it 5 stars only because of our lack of experience with other brands/models.

1 out of 5 stars TomTom sucks - both product and support   August 14, 2010

I bought this at costco for $199 because I thought it was good deal for lifetime traffic and map updates.

First, the traffic is only given if you plan a specific route - not general driving, ie. Google Map's color coding.
Second, I tried to update the maps during my first sync, and then the "activation code" became no good - and gps says "No Maps."
I have tried the website/support/emailing - but the auto-reply says "will get back to me soon," and none of the FAQ's or search address my topic.
The 877 ph# is useless. I've tried weekday am, weekday pm, Sat am, and now Sat 1:30pm...still permanent hold, 26 minutes of music and counting.

Btw, the GPS will not turn off when you leave the car...and by the time it does, it'll drain half the batter.
Further, the supplied cigarette adapter charges the unit, but if the GPS is being used...the trickle is so slow, it's basically not charging.
My prediction is that TomTom will get LOTS of returns on this unit - including mine.
Look for refurbished units for sale by TomTom soon.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money   August 14, 2010

Warning, this unit is riddled with so many problems, I can't even get customer service to reply. The auto reply says they are swamped with complaints, once they did respond, but only to the part of no manual, sent a link, but it was not the correct one, they chose to ignore all the problems with the unit. Addresses are way off, some as much as a mile. Many roads are not on the unit, even with the latest update some neighborhood that are 3-5 years old do not exist. It shows roads that do not exist? Unit consistantly picks much longer, time consuming routes. Many streets are misnamed, many roads have county number on the gps, yet the road has had a name for 15 years. Told me to go straight at a fork in the road? One road, probably 15 miles long, unit said it had no numbers for the road, so you had to ride for miles looking at mail boxes, and yes, it was a old road, places had been there for many years.
Memory is almost full, and there is no memory slot to add more, very poor planning. It is slow updating your actual speed. You have to set the time, but other brands do this for you. Road name only show up a few seconds, leaving no time to plan on turning. Speed limit is useless, only good mainly on interstate, yet other brands have speed limits on secondary roads. Going down the ramp to get on a interstate, it says to turn left? Guess thats why all those slow drivers are in the left lane! Can't delete individual temp go to locations, have to delete all. Has several nice voices, yet only compter voice gives street names. They don't even have a manual for this unit. I could go on, as there are about a dozen other issues with this brand, but save yourdelf the trouble, get something else. These are just a few of the problems found in the first 2 weeks,Ok, its not all bad, 5" screen is nice, volume is better than many, now, only if it could get me there. I had to order a different brand as this one could not get me to most places. My new Garmin gets me there.

4 out of 5 stars Good novice GPS but not very flexible   July 8, 2010

I purchased the TT XXL550M to replace a TomTom One (second edition) that was beginning to misbehave, as well as to get the larger screen (which is very nice) and lifetime maps (at $60/yr or so for new maps, the cost of the new GPS was easy to justify).

The XXL550M is attractive, easy to use, and sticks well to the windshield (but the GPS comes off the mount easily and is hard to reattach).

However, I was used to all the options that the One offered (screen layout, compass, etc.), and these appear to be missing from the XXL550M. Also missing was a real user's manual. Checking the website, I couldn't find one. I posted a question to them, and got a quick reply that gave me the link to the manual. Of course, excluding it from the box (or any reference to it!) is stupid, as is not including it in the list of manuals on the website.
