2 out of 5 stars Magellan 4700 Not a Good Model for Efficient or Correct Routing   September 10, 2010
D. Schwartz (Richmond, VA United States)
This unit replaces my Magellan 4040 for which Magellan no longer issues map updates. A shame because that unit is far superior in routing and the simplicity of use.

This Magellan 4700 has given me more incorrect or inefficient directions than it has correct/efficient routing. I judge that based on a number of routes which I travel regularly and also based on how well the old Magellan routes me on those same destinations. The unit takes 30 seconds to power on and then even longer to acquire the signal (even in open area with no trees). The screen is sharp and clear, but if you're using it on a bright sunny day the light coming in the car makes viewing of the screen VERY difficult.

Pros:
- Easy to see text on screen - large text
- Quick easy volume adjustment on map screen
- Choice of showing ETA, distance to destination, time remaining, current time, elevation, current speed, or direction.
- Easy to adjust zoom or pan out on map screen
- Quick Spell in entering street names and cities.
- AAA Tourbook Information
- Plenty of Points of Interest. Ability to choose which categories of points of interest are displayed on the map, and easily route to them.
- Easy access to see turn list.
- The sound quality of the directions is generally very good. One strange thing on this is that when the Magellan tells you you have a turn coming up ("in one mile, turn right...") is very sharp, but then when it continues and gives you the exit or street name ("...on Burling Avenue") the voice is somewhat muffled. I'm not sure why.
- Plenty of warnings before the next turn (two mile, one mile, then half-mile).
- Choice of Keypad (QWERTY or alphabetical order).
- Easy to read map. The current road you're on is colored in green with an arrow showing your location on the street. Other streets in the area are in very light blue, while roads running in the opposite direction (like the interstate) are colored yellow.

Cons:
- Too long boot up time and too much additional time to acquire the signal.
- Incorrect or inefficient directions. It doesn't matter if you choose fastest, shortest, or least use of highways.
- Does not maintain the trip route when turned off and then powered back on. The unit has asked if I wanted to resume the trip but then for some reason, the trip is lost and I have to go back to "previous destinations." The GPS will also not necessarily give you the same route when you turn the unit back on. This was incredibly annoying during a recent business trip. First I was told to take the NJ Turnpike to a certain exit. I stopped to get gas at one of the rest areas right on the Turnpike (did not get off an exit) and when I resumed, the unit had changed routes and directed me to take an exit much sooner and to navigate quite a number of local roads. Very bizarre.
- VERY slow in the calculation of route and recalculation of routes (if you've missed a turn). When you're on a highway and exits are coming up quickly, 20 seconds to verify a change or recalculate a route is WAY too long.
- Highway Lane Assist is sometimes incorrect. This feature gives you a visual display of the highway signs as you get to a highway interchange. They are sometimes reversed from that of the real signs. This is pretty dangerous when the GPS shows a sign pointing to your destination on the right when it should really be the left.
- Screen is VERY difficult to see on a sunny day. It doesn't matter if the screen is in day mode or night mode. It's fine if it's cloudy!
- Menu navigation options not as intuitive or straightforward as older Magellan Maestro units. While the buttons are easy to see, I cannot often find some of the tools or features I want without going to several different menu choices.
- AC Power charger is NOT included with product, though I did find an old phone charger that fits.
- Windshield mount not easy to adjust.
- Does not allow addition of custom points of interest.
- Cannot choose routes to avoid tolls (this was feature in my old Magellan).
- Voice Recognition doesn't work well in that you often need to repeat your commands several times.

2 out of 5 stars Maps Obsolete, #1 Voice Response is "I did not get that"   September 8, 2010
D. Pyle (Honolulu, HI USA)
While I was impressed with many other aspects of the GPS, I was surprised to discover my new Magellan Maestro 4700 (purchased July 2010) did not have the current (Spring 2010) map. A much older version was installed. Also, Magellan customer support refuses to update the map to the version current as of the purchase date, unless I pay another $80 for a Spring 2010 map - issued months before my purchase date. This is more than half the GPS' original purchase price. I expect a new GPS should be sold with current, not obsolete, maps included in the purchase price. I'm very unhappy with my experience with Magellan Customer Service on this issue. Based on this, I would give 1 star (defined by Amazon as "I hate it"), if it were not for aspects of the GPS that do work well - it's pretty quick finding alternate routes or adjusting its directions when I disagree with the GPS' recommendation of quickest route. So, I give 2 stars ("don't like it").

Some positives: helpful displays of your choice of time remaining to destination, distance to destination, elevation, MPH. I discovered a couple good restaurants I never knew about by searching nearby "Italian" or "Thai" etc. I did not find the 3-D buildings to be helpful other than as eye-candy. 3-D actually obscured streets somewhat and slowed overall responsiveness - but you can opt not to display 3-D.

Not so positive: I specifically wanted voice commands, hoping it would allow hands-free use of the features while I kept my eyes on the road. Unfortunately, the voice commands are not intuitive, and require you to pick from a numbered list of destinations. For example, if the options are "1) Main Street, 2) King Street or 3) River Street" you have to pick a number. It won't understand you if you say "Main Street." You have to look at the list (not the road), and say "Number 1". Voice recognition frequently misunderstands me. The most common reply I got from the GPS was "I didn't get that." I speak Standard American English, and wonder how much more it would struggle with any other accent. This is no Dragon Naturally Speaking. I hope a future edition would be state-of-the-art. If implemented better, voice command could be a valuable safety feature for use while driving.

Most negative: Obsolete maps at time of purchase is a huge disappointment, as is Magellan's lack of responsibility to provide the current maps as of the purchase date without charging more than half the purchase price as an added fee. Magellan's guarantee regarding current maps is deceptive. While the box states it comes "pre-loaded" with maps, nowhere does it state its maps will be obsolete, or that you must update to a previously released version within 30 days or, if you miss that deadline, pay a very high fee for a map already current at the time of purchase. To me, this is a deceptive parsing of its warranty language, and seems intended to gouge customers for current map software - which one would assume would already be included in the purchase price.

The guarantee wording (found online, not in the box) states that Magellan will update the "device's preloaded map free of charge if Magellan releases or makes available a map update within 30 days from the date of customer purchase." In plain language, this seems to reassure that new maps released within 30 days AFTER purchase are warranted, so you don't miss out if you buy just before an update. However beware if, like me, you buy AFTER an update, as I did in July - following a Spring 2010 update. Magellan customer service insists I pay extra for the update already released the previous Spring!

2 out of 5 stars No response from Magellan   September 6, 2010
Linda D Crnkovic (Stonewall, LA, US)
After using a borrowed Tom Tom and Garmin we decided to purchase the Magellan Maestro 4700 as our first GPS. On our first trip out with it the touch screen was not responsive and when I touched it the fourth time it cracked under the screen. I must add that I am a very careful person and know beyond a doubt that I didn't 'touch' it too heavy. I telephoned Magellan technical support and explained what happened to them and was told the problem was not covered under warrenty. I then wrote a letter to Magellan explaining in full detail the experience and suggesting the screen material may have been faulty. I never received a response from them. This was our first GPS purchase and we were looking forward to having it on our travels, but that is not to be. We will not purchase another Magellan even though it did have the features we were shopping for.

4 out of 5 stars Great GPS!   August 31, 2010
Charlene A. Mccloskey (Humble, TX USA)
I purchased this for my husband for his birthday. He loves it. He travels all over Texas and 98% of the time it takes him exactly where he needs to go. So now I've decided to purchase the same one for my 18 year old daughter and myself.

1 out of 5 stars A Bad Experience   August 30, 2010
BE GOOD, DO GOOD (NJ USA)

First the item arrived after I left for my trip for which I made the purchase. Thumbs down to Amazon. On returning from my vacation, I thought of keeping it since my old one needed a replacement. Turned it on and found that the traffic alerts needs a seperate purchase of $40/- more. After charging it the screen started flickering continously. Had enough with this POS. Returned it to Amazon. I guess Magellan is no longer what it used to be.
