LOVE IT!!! September 8, 2010 Rita Palfreyman (TX) We really love the RoadMate 1700. We have a 2009 Buick with a navigation system in it and it is very incompetent compared to the RoadMate 1700. We have an RV that it is great in, but you will need the long window mount for an RV. We also have a Jeep Wrangler we use it in. We even use it in our Buick instead of the built-in one.
It far exceeds our expectations. We expected it to be about like the Buick's system, but I cannot stress more how much better this is.
Great GPS September 6, 2010 Donna After many hours of research I selected this GPS because of size and the fact that it is just a GPS without all the extra things I did not want or need. The sound is great. The street names are clear. It is easy to read because of the big screen. I am not going to put it on the window because I do not want to advertise that I have one. I will buy a small bean bag for the tray between the seats and sit it there. It is very user friendly. I drove my son's car with the built in GPS and mine is very close to his and cost less. I am very happy with my Magellan Roadmate 1700.It does just what I wanted. I will not get lost with this GPS.
Overall a good GPS - though "how good", depends on your needs. September 1, 2010 SN Star (Washington DC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had this GPS for over 2 weeks now and took it for an extended road trip in northen CA while on a vacation.
Overall its a good unit - but that is a very subjective term, depending on what you want from your unit.
PROS
*LARGE SCREEN SIZE - I love it! This was one of the main reasons for replacing my Navigon 7100
*EASE OF USE - This is no brainer - its pretty simple to use, specially when typing in an address, since the onscreen keys are not only large and sensitive to light touch, the unit even speaks out the letter thats has been typed.
*QUICK SATELLITE AQUISITION - It takes about 2-5 seconds to locate the position, which is great.
*GOOD SCREEN VISIBILITY - We used it in a convertible with the top down - and the screen was still visible, under near direct sunlight (though i had to raise my polarized sunglasses :P )
*AUTO DAY/NIGHT MODE - It automatically changes the display settings depending on the time of the day - i know a lot of other units have this, but my previous one didnt - so a positive for me.
*AUTO ON/OFF with IGNITION - This is a huge plus for me, as i have hardwired the unit in my car, and dont have to touch it at all to turn it on or off - it goes with the car.
CONS:
*POI's CANNOT BE UPDATED BY USER: Even though most wont care about it - Its a HUGE NEGATIVE for me - I uploaded the Speed/Traffic Camera's on my previous GPS and it warned me everytime i approached one - its needed when you live in DC - i really miss that feature and hope that Magellan will incorporate that in here - Apart from that - the POI list seems okay - but i dont use those much.
*NO TRAFFIC - It doesnt have any option for any realtime traffic - I had it in my Navigon, though i didnt care too much about it, and i dont really miss it.
*NO BLUETOOTH - It doesnt have bluetooth, but again, i dont care about it - its already built in my car.
*NO AC CHARGER - The unit should come with a free AC Charger, specially since it has a very short battery life - It would make it easier to update the unit when updates are available via computer.
*SHORT BATTERY LIFE - The battery life of this unit is somewhere between 15 mins to 30 mins, though it doesnt bother me much since the unit is hardwired into my car.
*NEW UNITS/OLD MAPS - Even when you buy a brand new unit, it comes with old maps - even though a spring 2010 update is available from Magellan, - you have to call them within 30 days of purchase to get a free download (and thats a pain because you have to download it over 2GBs with your unit connected to a computer and running - almost impossible without the AC charger due to the short battery life unless you have a very fast internet connection. The update took me about 20 mins on a 16mbps internet connection.
Windshield mount: Cant comment on it, since my unit is hardwired to my dash using magnetic snaps from JoAnn Fabrics (like the ones used in ladies purses)
Overall, the routing of this unit is good, specially on highways and such - within busy cities, it sometimes tends to send one on a one way street or take a longer than necessary route. One has to be a little careful, and keep a watch when in complex cities like, like DC or NYC.
If you buy this unit, you will be happy, depending on what you want out of your GPS - and if you do get it - Dont forget to get your FREE map update from Magellan - they offer that only for the first 30 day - after that you will have to dish out another $80.
Hope this review helped you.
Easy to see, easy to use! August 26, 2010 Melissa L. Thornley (Bellevue, WA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We had another device previously and I never warmed up to it. The Magellan really fit my needs. The screen is very clear, easy to see and easy to READ. No more squinting for road names. It installed very easily, and the accessories give you a lot of options for placement. Once in it is easy to set up and get going. I have used it as a trip planner, and deliberately made wrong turns - it instantly reroutes you. I picked the most crazy of my friend's addresses and it mapped out the best way there, I was totally impressed. The cyborg voice is a little grating, but you can't have everything :)
The software included is easy to use and you can get updates from AAA if you are a member. All in all, I recommend this Magellan highly.
Not a reliable GPS August 23, 2010 Nikki 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This GPS sent me up a one way street towards oncoming traffic, to make matters worst I had my kids in the vehicle with me. Thank God it was 5am and there was not much traffic on the road. Also I went to a place called Pandora Drive and when I was leaving Pandora Drive every street that I had to make a turn it would say " turn left on Pandore Drive, turn right on Pandora Drive etc. In a nut shell every street was called Pandora drive. I don't know if all the Magellan GPS' have this problem, but mine did and that was potentially dangerous.
