I have a Garmin nüvi 255W, works fantastic, but it has a 4.3" screen and I have ended up in the wrong lane several times on big interchanges so the TOMTOM with the 5.0" screen and advanced lane guidance sounded really good and as the deal of the day for $89 how could you go wrong. unfortunately TOMTOM showed me no love. I'll just bullet point the issues here, there were no positives for me as after over 4 hours of tech support and trying I still hadn't gotten no further then plugging it into my computer.
NOTE: before I even start the menu on this thing is about as unintuitive as it gets, it's like trying to program 80"s VCR. On the Garmin I was never confused even once.
- My nearly 5 year old street with a dozen houses on it shows up as a field. What good is a GPS that doesn't know where you are at? Don't think that because your address is on the map that you are covered because if where you are going is not on the map you can't use the GPS to tell you how to get there.
- OK so I go get my free latest map update. 2 hours later I have finally loaded all the SW needed to get the map, registered with TOMTOM got TOMTOM Home and have downloaded my free map. No luck I still live in a field.
- Send TOMTOM tech support mail. 3 days later I get a long mail on resitting my device (wipes all your added data) deleting a bunch of SW from it changing file names on my computer etc etc. and the reloading everything from the web. 1 hour later, nope still live in a field. But my TOMTOM now has all kinds of updated SW that it never said was down rev before, hum?
- OK call support. Sorry we use a different map service then Garmin and you are not on our map. What you can do is use our really cool map share service and send in a map correction that once we verify will be given to all map share users. Hum, do they use cheaper older maps and then hope that their users fill in the gaps? hum.......
- OK it's 5.0" screen and advanced lane guidance for $89 so I'll give this map share correction thing a try. Wait, how the hell do the menus on this thing work. 30min later I have finally got the correction added to the device, now I have to plug it into my computer and upload it to TOMTOM.
- The final straw; tried to upload my street correction to TOMTOM and TOMTOM Home no longer works! Check the website and what do they recommend, resetting your device, wiping out your files, and removing TOMTOM home from your computer and starting over from square one! That's it, the honeymoon is over I filed for divorce and am returning it to Amazon.
That's my TOMTOM story hope it helps you when deciding.
PS when returning stuff to Amazon they now have UPS pick it up at your door and they bring the shipping labels too! Amazon just gets better and better!

Seems there is a problem with TomTom in regards to their batteries. I have owned several TomToms over the years and while they are good when they have power, they never seem to be able to work by itself for very long off of battery. I can plug up my 540S and have it charged by the next morning, but not even 30 mins into the trip it is saying it is almost out of power and I need to hook it up to charger. I've had my 540S since March 2010 and by the 2nd month I had it, it started doing this to me. My previous TomTom One did the exact same thing, although it went about 6-9 months before the battery would not hold a charge. I love the units and think they are superior to Garmin, but geeez the battery leaves alot to be desired. The directions don't always work as they should, taking me out of the way to get somewhere I found on my own a shorter route to. It picks up once I'm on the shorter route, but it almost seems a waste of $150 (cost when purchased in March) if I can find a shorter route on my own. Gotten to the point now that I end up leaving it sitting at home when I take a trip as I can usually find my way easier without it mounted on my windshield. One very low point about TomTom, besides the battery issues, is that it will take FOREVER to sync up with the satellite. I can understand while my vehicle is parked under my covered parking spot but not when I'm out in clear view of the heavens. It will usually take about 2-3 miles of driving (or about 5-10 mins) until it will finally talk to the satellite. Not to mention I wasn't too pleased when I found out (after purchasing this unit) that I couldn't use the yearly map update I purchased for the TomTom One with my new 540S....waste of $80 to get 6mo of use out of it. Again its not a GREAT unit, but it does what should do....

Hi I just want to say that if your loking for a GPS, DO NOT BUY tomtom My experience with this product was a complete disaster, 2 months ago my brand new GPS was blocked, tomtom customer support send me 5 emails with several procedures to fix my device without success, next email they send me has a file that supposed will repair the GPS but the only thing that this file do was a fatal damage on my Windows, I expend 2 hours fixing my computer, then becomes a little shine of hope when customer support send a email where they confirm me that I need to send them the GPS for an exchange, they promise me that they will send me back a refurbished one, why I will receive a refurbished GPS I bought a new one ? . Today are 30 days with no device, I dont have any notice about the other GPS that they suppoosed will send it to me. If you like betting, then buy one of this, but be sure to include this purchase on your prayers to avoid dealing with tomtom customer support department.

Its a good product. I purchased for my husband who does alot of traveling. He says is not great in cities such as NY but has helped out when needed.
