3 out of 5 stars Love it and Hate it   September 9, 2010
Bullwinkle56
This is my second Garmin GPS navigator. Sad to say it still has some of the same annoying traits as the first one that I bought 5 years ago. We recently took a road trip from Minneapolis to Phoenix and in general it works pretty well. We found destinations that I'm sure would have been very difficult without the Garmin. (The love part). On the other hand, the voice somehow mysteriously muted itself at the critical point where I needed to exit resulting in a 20-mile excursion to turn around. The most amazing screw-up was that it kept insisting that I needed to get off I35 in downtown Kansas City, MO when even I knew that I needed to just stay on I35N to get back to Minneapolis. (I don't believe that this road is new) It kept telling me to stay in the right-hand lane when the signs clearly indicated to stay left for I35. It even insisted that I needed to make a U-turn on I35 on the 10-lane freeway in downtown Kansas
city!
Garmin's customer service -- what a joke. A 30+ minute wait to talk to someone??? They suggest early morning, mid-week but the wait was still 30+minutes.
One more pet peave; This thing needs a "pause" button. I got so tired of hearing "recalculating" and "make a U-turn" every time I pulled off the interstate to re-fuel.

4 out of 5 stars WIth 4.0 Update It's Unstoppable   September 2, 2010

This GPS has been around the block for a little while. What hasn't been around the block for a while is the 4.0 software update for this GPS which came out spring 2010. This major software update resolves tons of bugs and issues i was originally having with my 765T. The inaccurate touch screen and near impossibility to type accurately on the keyboard has been resolved with the 4.0 update. The 4.0 update has also resolved an issue where searching for POI's takes MUCH longer than should be expected. Overall, the 4.0 update makes this GPS a SOLID and WELL ROUNDED device. In my opinion, this GPS is fantastic! It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the latest and greatest models but for me it does one thing, which is what i bought it for, and it does it very well and that's navigation and re-routing. If i wanted a computer on my dashboard i would use my iPhone, but i don't. I just wanted a simple, easy to use, and reliable GPS device that would get me from point a-b or from point a to b to c without a hassle and do so with the smartest routes available, which the 765T has been doing. THe traffic feature has worked flawlessly for me after the 4.0 update as well as the update to the 2011 maps. I never question the GPS and always get to the destination within 5 minutes of the arrival time. THe bluetooth and FM transmitter are worthless features to me since the underpowered FM transmitter is basically useless and i don't need bluetooth on my GPS to talk hands free because i use a bluetooth headset with my mobile phone. I did pair my iPhone with the 765T and it worked flawlessly. The 765T automatically imported my phones contacts and gave them to me in a nice touch screen accessible list so that i could just touch to dial a number. It definately works, and works well but it's a feature i will rarely, if ever use. Overall, i have almost no complaints with this GPS. I had a couple of gripes before the 4.0 update but the 4.0 update and the latest version of the maps,2011, have given me a rock solid, bullet proof GPS that i have no worries about relying on when i'm on the road. I would highly recommend this GPS, especially with the free traffic, to anyone looking for a BASIC GPS, with excellent satellite acquisition, fast re-routing, ad-supported yet not intrusive traffic updates, and an easy to use non complicated interface. Just make sure to UPDATE TO THE LATEST 4.0 SOFTWARE FOR THE MOST RELIABLE AND ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS GPS and if you can also update the maps to 2011 and this thing will be rock solid for you like it is for me for years to come.

2 out of 5 stars Please Read Before You Purchase   September 1, 2010

First of all, I'll try to throw the negative issues here first; if you can overlook mine as you gather the 765T's feedback with others, then feel free to look at the good things. And some bad/ugly may be also good, and vice-versa.

THE BAD (and UGLY):
I've had the 765T since late last fall 2009. It's been quirky with the touch screen and also with a hangup with regards to the user inputting information; trying to type for any extended period of about 10 or more characters and it suddenly won't respond to typing for about 15 seconds or so. I've actually just finished *finally* writing to Garmin's website requesting help with resolving these issues but they have a 3-day lag time with which to respond. I hope I can follow through and keep any interested people informed as I update this.

I have just finished installing another map update, today Sept 1. It's my 3rd (the first being the initial latest mapping update, then two unlimited ones). The previous one in May worked fine yet there are some instances still, where streets that are quite old enough to be on the map still aren't there (seemingly, very small streets) or that they are dead-ends and not through streets (this is rare).

The unit's wire stinks. I don't care for the way one has to plug the wire into the mount because the plug is behind the mount and the unit's seat. And the wire is very thick, with a large square thing near the plug. I hang the wire around my mirror and that cord is truly not the best type of cable (straight, non-coiled, with the 4-inch plastic thing near its end) I've had on a GPS.

I'm still learning the variables to the "quickest route" option. I just tried using "most fuel efficient" as an option, but it just seems as though there are instances where I second guess the unit, which seemingly doesn't factor in traffic lights and traffic. How often have I been taken into traffic and *then* seen the green traffic indicator turn yellow (as if I'm the one whose unit sends a signal to live traffic that there's a significant slow-down).

There are also some kind of alerts, but even now, I simply don't understand why, for instance, I get a warning while driving south on I-95 about Laurel, Md (whose city center is miles away). I have gotten these alerts yet I still for the life of me don't get what I'm being alerted about.

I still don't understand why my favorites aren't easily accessible. Other units I've had, like Navteq and TomTom have let me dive right into them when searching for favorites. But try to get to my work destination and I have to look through previous destinations instead.

If you've had the unit powered down, or if you're traveling to a different city where the unit's off for the change (flying for instance), the unit can take a long time to locate the new batch of satellites. How often I've had to power down the unit and turn it back on to try making my unit find them faster? I now bring my unit on planes with me and have them powered up while in flight and after landing, to get it to know my new location before I have to wait in a rental car at an airport for the 765T to figure where I am.

I've had unit crashes/restarting on a few instances. Unsure whether it's the unit, solar flares or some alien life form shadowing me...

THE GOOD:
I love the lane assist because I tend to be in areas or states I'm very unfamiliar with. Many of the visualizations are very similar to what the lane-assist screen show.

The mounting hardware has worked like a charm; much better than the TomTom units I've had.

I have used "most fuel-efficient" while going to Rockville yesterday, and it helped me get around that hideous I-95 traffic between Baltimore and Rockville (@ 3:30 and 5:30 pm).

The "unlimited" map updates are welcome. They are limited to the unit you have, and that's limited to the life that the unit actually lives. But it's nice not having to plunk down additional money for another map update each quarter. At $120, is it better than getting a map book? For me, yes, because I travel all over the country, and I would have to get maps everywhere I go, which would have paid for the map update fee anyway, since a map book just for the Baltimore area (and one for the Washington D.C. area) would cost, I think, $60 each.

I feel the day/night screen change is vital. I want a map that's dark when the sun sets, and that's exactly what this does. I mean, exactly when it sets, my preferred black background screen replaces that white daylight background.

Using my unit regularly, it truly can locate the satellites and be ready to start very soon.

MY CONCLUSION:
Honestly, it's my unit now, beyond time to send it back. If I had known what I do now (esp. after searching for "Nuvi 765T problems") I wouldn't have gotten it.

I tried the bluetooth feature which worked OK, but I still have stopped using it to answer my Bluetooth-enabled phone. I don't bother taking pics of my favorites to add to the unit's database, and what's the point of adding mp3 files via SD card when my iPods work fine, and yield better music experience?

I'm still adjusting to the unit's quirks and limitations. But I still love it more than having to stop and look through a paper map book for an address. I still feel a bit compelled to get paper map books as a backup. I mean, the mapping software tends to be dated by the time it gets ready for downloading. But I do hope my unit stays in operation for years, so I can take advantage of those mapping updates. I sure hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars Updated review; Advertisements CAN be turned off   August 30, 2010
Ed Sejud (Boulder, Colorado)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I previously reviewed this product and complained that it flashed advertisements on the screen, which I considered objectionable, and that the advertisements could not be turned off. That information is published elsewhere on the internet from several sources. Unfortunately, that information is incorrect. The advertisements CAN be turned off. Thanks to a very responsive Garmin customer support department, I learned that the "Traffic" reports that help the navigator avoid traffic jams are the source of the advertisements, called "Offers." The reason the traffic reports are "free" of charge is that they're paid for by the advertisements. If you reject the traffic reports (I never wanted them to begin with) you can also reject the "Offers" that go with them. The misimpression that they can't be turned off arises because the "Traffic" icon only appears when the automobile power cord is attached to the unit. The power cord contains the FM antenna that brings down the traffic reports and the accompanying advertising. If the power cord/antenna is not attached, the Traffic icon does not appear in the Settings menu. So, you can only turn off the Offers when the icon is there to do it with, which means the automobile power cord must be attached. You can't make the selection on battery power or with the AC power cord because the FM antenna is not present to trigger the Traffic icon.

My remaining criticism of the unit based on its failure to display (in large letters at the top of the screen) the approaching cross streets is still valid. On older model Garmins, the approaching cross streets were prominently displayed, as an assist for people like myself who are getting on in years, and who can't see street signs so well at night anymore. The 765T and subsequent models (according to a Garmin rep) now only prominently display the name of the street you're traveling on, which is an almost useless piece of information. At a minimum, it's a waste of valuable screen space. I don't know why this change was made, but Garmin should consider putting it back the way it was on the Nuvi 200W, for instance, for those of us who have problems reading street signs at night.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality assurance.   December 27, 2009

I have had this device just over 2 weeks and traveled from Los Angeles to Colorado. It was an early xmas gift Well first off the device came with a nice scratch on the screen which is not horribly noticeable but you should be ready to receive a not perfect device. I have been back and fourth with Garmin for several days because the clock even when set manually is off by 1 hour for all functions other then just the time. So while I have it set to tell me the right time the world clock gives every city off by one hour and all the trip times are off by 1 hour. When you go to type in a manual search for a POI (which are very out of date and limited compared to even my old TomTom 510 and TomTom POI system) the system will hang as you start to type and it feels like the unit has locked up for a couple seconds. The best traffic you can buy for it is the MSN direct package which is being phased out in 2012. That wasn't mentioned in the product description. Just that the MSN direct life time was available. I guess by lifetime they mean less then 2 years.

I highly recommend against getting this product. I wanted to return it but was told I can only exchange it for the same device. Normally I don't send reviews because hey you buy something its not so great you return it. Well not with this. You buy it and you are stuck with a product that you can only hope will work for you.

I plan to post a blog of the rest of my trip comparing the results of the nuvi 765t against my old TomTom 510 since they both use the Navtec maps. Comparing the ancient 510 (with fm traffic) routes and POI accuracy. I will post the blog address later if I am able. I have just never been so dissatisfied. It has so many cool features but that doesn't seem to really matter if it can't get me safely from point a to point b. Also the refurb comes with old maps and to upgrade to the new maps will end up costing you more then just buying the New product that comes with 30 day map guarantee.

Garmin has offered to send me a new one but if the refurbished one is bad that doesn't make me feel warm and cozy about a new one that in theory has had less Quality assurance checks. I just wish I could return it for a refund but I can't.
