Amazon.com Product Description
The ultra-thin nüvi 1450 has a large 5-inch screen and offers multiple-point routing, spoken street names, lane assist with junction view to guide you through busy highway interchanges, pedestrian routing options, and ecoRoute to find the most fuel-efficient route.

Junction view guides you to the correct lane for your upcoming turn or exit

Announces the names of exits and streets so you can keep your eyes on the road

5-inch widescreen display with vibrant color

See Even More
It's easy to see where you're going on nüvi 1450's 5-inch touchscreen display. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. With its big, bold display, you won't miss a thing.

Know the Lane before It’s Too Late
No more guessing which lane you need to be in to make an upcoming turn. Lane assist with junction view guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

Plan Ahead
nüvi 1450 includes advanced navigation features to take the worry out of traveling. With route planning you can save 10 routes, specify via points and preview simulated turns on the 1450's large screen. In addition, nüvi 1450 automatically sorts multiple destinations to provide an efficient route for errands, deliveries or sales calls. A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

Get Turn-by-Turn Directions
The intuitive interface greets you with two simple questions: "Where To?" and "View Map." Touch the color screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination. It comes preloaded with detailed City Navigator NT street maps, nearly 6 million points of interest (POIs), 2-D or 3-D maps and the speed limit for most major roads. Its digital elevation maps show you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. With the 1450's enhanced user interface, you can slide your finger to conveniently scroll between screens. You can also upload custom points of interest (POIs). And with HotFix satellite prediction, nüvi calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.

Go Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 1450 saves you gas and money with ecoRoute — a green feature that calculates the most fuel-efficient route, tracks fuel usage and more. The 1450 includes many travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. With photo navigation, you can download pictures from Garmin Connect Photos and navigate to them. Take advantage of the nüvi 1450’s traffic compatibility and navigate away from traffic. The nüvi 1450 is compatible with both the GTM 25, FM traffic receiver with lifetime subscription and the GDB 55, MSN Direct receiver (device receiver purchase required for either option). With its "Where Am I?" emergency locator, you always know your location. Simply tap the screen to get your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations. The 1450 features Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with our free Garmin Garage where you can download custom voices and vehicles.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the 350 by far   July 31, 2010
Natter
I got the Garmin Nuvi 1450 to replace my old 350. The 350 was great and could drive by GPS alone - without even seeing the road. However, it began to have difficulty with routing and mistook one road for another. Quite often it would require rebooting, and sometimes not even that would solve the issue.

The 1450 is a huge improvement on the 350. The first thing I noticed (besides the large, easy to see screen) is just how much faster it is. It calculates coordinates and routes within moments, and can even calculate inside, which the 350 could not do. In addition, I recall driving through at least one tunnel without it losing reception.

The 1450 has some nice features. My favorite is how it tells you what speed you're going and what the most recently posted limit is. It can sometimes be a little off, but it can be a great help if you're in an area where you haven't seen a speed sign for a while. Unlike the 350, it will tell you ahead of time which -direction- you're going to turn in, and not just that you will be turning. Additionally, it even shows you how many lanes there are on the road, and which ones you should avoid and which you should be in. On some highways, it even shows you a close up of where the lanes diverge just before you need to keep left or right.

It should be noted that the 1450 doesn't play mp3s or audiobooks, but this wasn't really an issue for me as I use a separate system for that anyway.

It is much easier to access and change the settings on the 1450 than it was the 350. There are many features I still haven't explored yet. I also haven't imported any additional voices, but that will be fun to play with in the future.

The only real issue I had with the 1450 is that it sent me to the wrong address (not far from the actual address, but far enough to be a little confusing)on 3 occasions. This could be attributed to poor data and not the unit itself.

Overall I've found the 1450 easy to work with and extremely good at fast re-rooting. I took it on a roadtrip from the midwest to the east coast and it got me safely there and back with minimal issues. I would definitely recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars A lemon! There's a design flaw in this product!   July 30, 2010
Stellagirl
I love the big screen!

But ... I've had the unit for a week, and I'm returning it today as a defective product. The unit is much less reliable and much slower than my old Garmin 4.3". Flaws:
1. The unit has twice shut down while navigating a route. The first time, it took 5 minutes to reboot. Last night, it wouldn't turn back on. Garmin's website says there's a patch for this. The need for the software patch was identified in Feb. Why is Garmin still selling units that need a sw patch?
2. Compared to the 4.3 inch, it takes much longer to calculate new routes. That's a big problem if you need a new route quickly, such as when you're on the road.
3. The 4.3 inch shows the road you're on, even if you haven't set a "go to" destination. This unit shows the car as being in a white field, and the road in the distance.

3 out of 5 stars It is just ok   July 25, 2010

I recently returned home to Michigan from a trip to Vermont and Maine.
Some of the things i liked about the unit were:
The screen size, good graphics, easy to see.
The lane assist feature worked very well.
It is quite easy to change settings, route options, voices, language, etc.

The major problem that i had was that this unit sent me down dead end roads, four times in ten days of travel. This was maddening,to the point that i do not trust the directions it provides. On major roads it did very well, but when you leave the freeway or toll road, watch out.

The other complaint that i have is the spoken road names for upcoming turns.Very often the announced street name will not coincide with street signs or paper maps.
It will commonly give a name, such as tulip trail or mountain blvd,When the street signs will have state route number,or a county road number.
I would not buy another Garmin,I will take a long look at other options.

1 out of 5 stars Roads and waypoints disappear too quickly when zooming out!   July 22, 2010
bsmeee
I've been a loyal Garmin customer for many years. I upgraded (or thought I was upgrading!) to the 1450 from an old Nuvi 360. When zooming out the road detail and custom waypoints disappear far sooner on the 1450 than on my old 360. On the 360 I can zoom out to see the roads around me and the waypoints remain visible. With the 1450 the smaller roads disappear far too quickly for the unit to be useful! I tried to use the 1450 in Colorado on a Jeep trip. I couldn't zoom out far enough to see the other end of the road I was on or most other roads in the area. Again, I'm comparing this to the 360, I can do these things with the 360 even though it's a much smaller screen! If you are looking for an inexpensive gps receiver it's a great price, just be aware that much of the time it will look like you are traveling through a barren wasteland! I did have the unit set to maximum detail and using it in the "North up" mode that Garmin recommends. Garmin's response was that things change between models and the engineers must have decided to reduce detail sooner when zooming out compared to the 360. They also say the new 3700 series models function the same as the 1450. These changes have Garmin's units pretty much useless for what I need them for (except for my old 360)! If you only use it to punch in an address and go without caring about seeing any detail on the roads around you it may work fine for you!

2 out of 5 stars Garmin has quality control problems   July 20, 2010

I think that this is a potentially great product but a common problem that Garmin has is problems with their touch screen. My particular one failed fairly quickly after purchase (2 months). In the process of searching for possible fixes for this issue, you see that a large number of Garmin devices have touch screen problems. More generally, I'm not convinced that Garmin is competing on device quality. Rather I think they are competing on features. I think that there is nothing specifically wrong with that, but I'm afraid that Garmin may be providing devices that have a nice feature set but that have very limited lifespan. As a point of reference, it is possible to create products that have reliable touchscreens and I would pay a premium to get one that would continue to function. Either that is not what Garmin wants to do or that is not what the GPS market will support. In either case, pretty disappointing.
